Now while residents are more concerned about the aesthetic design of the concrete pavers, it is equally important to know the construction design of the pavers. By making sure that the paver is suitable for the job, this will also ensure the overall longevity of the projects lifetime.
There are several differences when it comes to moulds. Let’s take a look at 2 of the most common and effective kinds of paver moulds. Wet cast pavers and Dry cast pavers.
How are the Wet cast pavers & Dry cast pavers made?
The primary difference between wet cast & dry cast pavers can be seen through its manufacturing process.
Dry Cast Pavers
In the case of dry cast pavers, only a small amount of water is used in the concrete mix. Like wet cast pavers, dry cast paver mixes are similarly placed into a mould and are then compressed with very high pressure using complex machinery. These compressed moulds are then cured on racks before being palletized. Since these kinds of pavers are air-cured they can be produced quickly and affordably.
Wet Cast Pavers
Just like the name, the concrete used to manufacture wet cast pavers is actually more liquid-based. It has a high slump which gives it the ability to be poured from a mixer or truck.
What is a slump?
Slump is a relative measurement in terms of concrete consistency, a slump test is usually conducted in order to measure the workability of a mix. The test involves filling a slump cone with concrete then carefully removing the cone and later measuring how much the concrete slumps from the height of the cone.
Mixing machines called concrete batch plants are used to combine pre-determined quantities of sand and coarse aggregate with the exact weight of the cement.
Additives are later added to speed up hydration, release agent, colourants, black & white efflorescence inhibitors as well as strengthening fibres.
The concrete mix is later poured into a flexible shaped mould for the paver and then levelled off.
A vibratory process is then used to settle the concrete, filling small voids and then forcing any small air pockets to be expelled through the open top surface.
Once the concrete has been cured, the mould is removed and the pavers are palletized and are ready to be sent for shipping. Also, the curing process for wet cast pavers is quite longer than a dry cast paver thereby making it more labour-intensive to produce.
How do Wet cast pavers & Dry cast pavers differ in terms of colour, strength & Protection
Color and Finish
Wet cast pavers usually feature colour tones that are more bold. They are smoother and have more intricate surfaces and can better imitate natural stone in their appearance.
Dry cast pavers, on the other hand, have traditionally been more simplistic and are usually basic in colour and texture. Likewise, modern manufacturing techniques have made colour blends and surface textures more desirable.
Protection & Maintenance
After deciding the kind of pavers that you’re going to be using for your project, you need to ensure that it stays safe and protected from seasonal changes. In the case of both dry and wet cast pavers, they should be sealed to prevent possible staining, chemical deterioration from any acids pr salts and colour fading from use over a period of time.
Both wet and dry cast pavers can be used for residential projects like driveways, walkways and patios.
Benefits of using Dry Cast Paving
- Dry Cast pavers can be extremely durable and are more suitable for areas with high traffic.
- They are more precise dimensional wise making it easy and quick to install.
Benefits of using Wet cast Pavers
- Wet cast pavers can be visually more appealing and also serve as an alternative solution to concrete brick paving.
- Wet cast paving also has the advantage for providing a variety of paving shapes, textures and sizes.
- The more diverse kinds of wet-casting paving moulds offer a practical paving option while simultaneously obtaining the natural look of the stone.
- Wet cast pavers are more suitable for residential projects
